Newroz - Kurdish new year

Annie and I were fortunate enough to be in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq for the Newroz celebrations.

We ended up hiring a local fixer to come with us for translation and to make sure we didn’t get lost or catch fire.

Kurds around the world celebrate their New Year which starts with Spring. For thousands of years, the beginning of the Kurdish New Year has been associated with joy, dancing, family gatherings, cooking traditional food and, of course, making huge customary fires.

Beautiful people and a beautiful celebration to welcome in the Kurdish new year.
